Unless you have small kids who played with your emacs config over night,
I don't see how this could have happened.

This type of error can occur in 1000+ places. Do M-x
toggle-debug-on-error, try you stuff. And send the full traceback. Plus
some info about your install (M-x ess-submit-bug-report).
