[ESS] Utf-8 problems

I guess it's not even related to Emacs, but more to the environment and how
R loads locales... On my system (Debian Squeeze), if I open R directly in a
terminal, I have the following (the same happens if I use Emacs+ESS):

 > paste("åäö")
[1] "åäö"
 > sessionInfo()
R version 2.15.0 (2012-03-30)
Platform: i486-pc-linux-gnu (32-bit)

locale:
  [1] LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC=C
  [3] LC_TIME=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=fr_FR.UTF-8
  [5] LC_MONETARY=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=fr_FR.UTF-8
  [7] LC_PAPER=C LC_NAME=C
  [9] LC_ADDRESS=C LC_TELEPHONE=C
[11] LC_MEASUREMENT=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION=C

attached base packages:
[1] stats graphics grDevices utils datasets methods base

Not sure how it helps, though. I'm sure I didn't do anything particular for
R but, again, it's Debian Squeeze...
Mathieu.
