Yes, and above you mention that your emacs version is 21.4.1
Yes, I believe that this is the officially supported emacs version on the
super stable and hence professionally used RHEL5 (Redhat Linux
Enterprise version 5).
Still, we have been somewhat more reluctant than in the past to support
"very old" (I know, this is debatable!) versions of emacs.
If I had a bit more time, I would indeed try to help keeping ESS
running, at least with all the "old functionality" (i.e. possibly not
supporting new stuff such as 'eldoc ...),
but I really don't have the time, currently...
But I would accept patches .. if you find someone else to do the work,
and I could even test them on one of our important servers which runs RHEL5.
