[ESS] how to kill ess???

I'm pretty sure that 

   1) C-g (or  'ESC ESC ESC')

  2a) kill the R process via C-c C-q (or the '[Signals] menu) 

worked.
In rare cases, I may have had to revert to

  2b) kill the *R* emacs buffer (C-x k)  without having to kill emacs.
