[ESS] R ESS Tab does not work

Are you sure it does 'nothing'? If it is re-indenting a line that is 
properly indented nothing will change position.

     TAB (translated from <tab>) runs the command ess-indent-command
     which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `ess-mode.el'.It is
     bound to TAB, <menu-bar> <ESS> <ESS Edit> <Indent line>.
     (ess-indent-command &optional whole-exp)

If you want you can rebind the TAB key in ess-mode.

But maybe you should just use tab-to-tab-stop to override what 
ess-indent-command wants to do.

Try M-i where you think you need a tab and see if that helps. If you don't 
like the stops

 	Use M-x edit-tab-stops to edit them interactively.
