OK, on looking more closely I see I have 

(add-hook 'inferior-ess-mode-hook
          (lambda () (setq inferior-ess-start-file "~/.ess-stata")))

in ess-local.el. It's not the right approach, as it also executes when
I start R (but does no real harm).
