[ESS] R: R: Xemacs icons are not shown on win2000

David,

When you say Makefile, I assume that you mean an actual file called
"Makefile" without an extension? If so, then (I think) you won't be able
to make an association with that file as it doesn't really have a type,
only a name. (See the PS at the bottom for an extra comment)

However, a workable option is to put Xemacs in your send to list (right
click menu) - that way you can send any file to Xemacs. To do this, go
to the following folder, where <your profile name> needs to be replaced
with the actual name of your profile.

C:\Documents and Settings\<your profile name>\SendTo

* In this folder right click on some blank space on the right hand pane
of Windows Explorer. And select "New" and then "short cut".
* In the dialog box that comes up "Browse for the xemacs.exe file",
click OK and then give it some description, e.g. "Xemacs".

Now, when you right click on ANY file you can "send it" to Xemacs.

Note: Richard Heiberger's and my comment about gnuemacs / NTEmacs are
again valid here - use gnuclientw.exe or emacsclient to open the file in
an existing instance of Emacs. As noted previously, I don't know how
Xemacs deals with this.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Andreas

PS: In my previous email I talked about associating the "Open" action
with Xemacs. You can add additional actions, such as "Run" and "Edit"
(and probably just about anything else) and use other commands. For
example, you could associate a "Run" command with a TEX file, which runs
LaTeX on the file.

Andreas,

Thanks. I had tried this but the icon being in the .exe and the clinking
on "Advanced" had eluded me.

I am now able to get the icons I want to show up for the various file
types, which is excellent.

Since you have been so helpful, maybe you can explain something else to
me.

Suppose I have a file which I want to open with XEmacs. To be explicit,
suppose I have a Makefile. Being a text file, I want to edit it using
XEmacs. I double-click on it and am asked to choose a program to open
the file. Now first of all, XEmacs is not on the long list of programs
which I could use. Then if I try and browse for the program, I go to
xemacs.exe click on it and the box saying open. But xemacs.exe doesn't
get associated with my Makefile. It is like xemacs.exe is a non-program.

Any suggestions?

David Scott
