[ESS] slow control commands over remote X session

I am running the emacs 22.1.1 with ess 5.3.4 via a remote ssh -X 
connection. With normal typing, the program is acceptably responsive, 
but with and C- or M- sequence there is a lag up to 10 seconds in 
execution. This seems to be new behavior as I do not recall this as of 
several weeks ago.

Why might this be and is there anything I can do about it?
