[ESS] R function arguments tips

Hi!

I am trying to use "R function arguments tips", but find it confusing. 
Should this be available as a default option after installing and 
properly setting ess 5.3.5 or should I manually type ess-r-args-show or 
assing a key-binding for this function? I would like to have tips by 
default whenever I am in R-mode and inside ().

Additionally, I noticed that If I issue ess-r-args-auto-show I get ^M 
character inside ().

I tried above with .emacs having only

(load "/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/ess/lisp/ess-site")

Using:
- ess 5.3.5
- emacs 22.1-0ubuntu4~feisty1 i.e.
This is GNU Emacs 22.1.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.11)
  of 2007-08-15 on palmer, modified by Ubuntu
