yes.

I don't understand the problem yet.

First guess, is that you are inside a function and the substitute
is therefore getting information from the wrong frame.  This is an
FAQ in R for lm() and relatives when the data=argument is not explicit.
If this is the problem it is an R usage, not an ESS problem.
You said it works from the command line, suggesting that the problem is
something else.

I fall back on the last line of the R-help email signature:
   "provide commented, minimal, self-contained, reproducible code."
