Hi:

A couple of things.  First the docs say that the command is
something else than what you had:
tar -zxf ess-VERSION.tar.gz

Secondly, to get around the owner/group problems, there is
tar --owner=SOMETHING --group=SOMETHING

For more details, try tar --help or man tar.
