[ESS] ESS with Cygwin and inferior-ess buffers

I'm not clued up enough with lisp to set the locations interactively.
What I tried was a skeleton .emacs file with only those two plus the
location of the dump file (which it finds to dump to alright, but
can't see it to read back from).  I need to specify a dump location
because the default /tmp/ directory is not available.

Whatever I try, I always end up with the same problem.  I thought
there might have been an issue with filenames beginning with a dot,
but that had no effect either.

No standard locations here.  I'm talking about a computer where there
is only one location where users are allowed to write any files.  I
have to tell emacs the whole path to the bin file in that location.
Would that have any effect on our ability to work out what's the
problem?
