Thanks again - tuff one to tweak,

in linux with init.el as follows

;; gnuserv is the program
(require 'gnuserv)
(gnuserv-start)
(setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame))

gives the following at start of Xemacs

Symbol's value as variable is void: ^?ELF

and with init.el as follows

(add-to-list 'load-path "usr/lib/xemacs-21.4.15/i686-pc-linux"))
(require 'gnuserv)
(gnuserv-start)
(setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame))

start of Xemacs OK

but when
k <- edit(k)

opens 6b8b4567 and allows editing of k
but C-x # still gives
'6b8b4567 does not belong to gnuserv client'

in windows

with the fllowing in init.el

"C:\Program\XEmacs\XEmacs-21.4.13\i586-pc-win32")
(require 'gnuserv)
(gnuserv-start)
(setq gnuserv-frame(selected-frame))

when

a window opens with
