Before I attempt to follow what you did, please try again with John Fox's
current recommendations.  His original suggestion to put *scratch*
in R-mode goes against the standard emacs settings where *scratch*
is always in Lisp Interaction Mode.  At the request of the ESS core group,
he revised his init file to leave *scratch* alone and to use an
ordinary file, for example myfile.r, to write R programs and and send
the lines from myfile.r to the *R* buffer.  The file extension ".r" places
the buffer containing myfile.r into R-mode.
