XP comes with Hibernate, so effectively you never need to turn it off.

At shutdown time, your can enter
   START/ Turn.off.computer/ Hibernate

This saves the current state of the memory and then powers down.

When you turn the machine back on, it restores the memory exactly as it was
and then continues.  In Hibernate mode, the power is off; there is no battery drain
on laptops.  The restore is much much faster than a reboot.
