R Hangs on q()

I've just successfully installed Emacs 21.3 and ESS 5.2.0
on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop running Windows XP, using
the instructions posted by Paul Johnson and Tony Rossini.

Thanks for your efforts.

It works! Well... almost always.

When I quit R and choose to save the workspace, R seems
to hang. CPU usage shoots up to 100%, and the only
way I can get out of it is to kill Rterm.exe from the
task manager.

For some strange reason, this only seems to occur about half the time.
My quick-fix is to invoke savehistory() and save.image() before
quitting via q(). I can then kill Rterm.exe without losing my
work.

Also, command completion is very slow, as is plotting.

Any suggestions?
