[ESS] installation/ ess 5.2.3/ R 2.0.0/ mandrake

Colleagues

I have recently upgraded to Mandrake 10.1 and am having trouble getting ess
5.2.3 (or ver. 5.2.2) running with R 2.0.0 under Xemacs 21.4.

I have made no other modifications to the ~/.xemacs.init.el file other than
to add the line 
(load "/usr/lib/ess-5.2.2/lisp/ess-site")
just below the 
;; {{{ Configuration varaible functions statement

I have not edited the ess.site.el file.

When Xemacs starts it returns an error:
error in init file - cannot open load file: menu.elc

Any suggestions to resolve these problems?
