split screen on startup

Oops!  all wrong.

Rather it's a bug that we accidentally introduced into ESS 5.2.2
(and is still in the current sources).
and it was 'all' dealt with two weeks ago on this mailing list:

starts the thread and has two followups.

So the solution is to wait for 5.2.x.

The workaround : 
    After starting up:
    1_  click into *R*
    2_  C-x 1
