R help formatted for buffer rather than terminal?

When I ask for help in an *R* buffer, I get output that looks like it
is formatted for a terminal with backspaces and underline characters.
How do I tell ESS 5.1.24 that I want it to be formatted for the *R*
buffer rather than a terminal?  Here's an example:

> help(read.xport, package=foreign)
