opening graphics devices using ESS under Windows NT

I just installed XEmacs 21.4.6 and ESS 5.1.21 on a workstation that
contains Windows NT 4.0 and Splus 6. ESS seems to work fine except during
plotting.  For example,

plot(1:10) yields NOTHING!

and

graphsheet() yields:

> graphsheet()
Problem in .C("S_axum_device",: Can only be run from S-PLUS graphical
client., while calling subroutine S_axum_device
Use traceback() to see the call stack
Problem in .C("S_axum_device",: Can only be run from S-PLUS graphical
client., while calling subroutine S_axum_device
Use traceback() to see the call stack

Error during wrapup: Cannot shut down device 1 (the null device)

Can someone indicate how to open a graphics device in ESS using a Windows
NT operating system?

Incidentally, I don't experience any of these problems on my Sun
Workstation, where plot() automatically opens a Motif graphics device in
another window.
