Thanks for the help. I did the following and had a emacs coredump.
1,untar the ess-5.1.21 under tmp2 directory.
2.add (load "/cbl/schen/tmp2/ess-5.1.21/lisp/ess-site")
When I start the emacs, I got a coredump.
gomez 12% emacs
Fatal error (6).Abort (core dumped)

Don't (byte)compile. It really is preferred that you not compile until you
verify that it works. (it's a bit faster, but not that much faster,
unless you are using a slow machine)
Does it work w/o compiling?
