Creeping along with ESS

You just detected a recently inserted glitch.  It's harmless.
The options() statement is a new addition to ESS 5.1.20 that gives S/R
the information that you are running it from ESS.  It is supposed to
be sent to S/R after the connection.  It is useless information for the
unix prompt.  It is now on my list to postpone that message to the right
place when using S+elsewhere.

Move the cursor to the end of the buffer with M-> or with the mouse.

then enter
  telnet mymachine
you will be prompted for loginname and password.
You will then be at the unix prompt on the remote machine and can enter
S to start the S-Plus program.

What does it mean to say
> Trying to telnet seems to connect, but after being prompted for the 
> password nothing happens.

does emacs freeze?
does the other machine say anything?
are you using
   M-x send-invisible
before typing the password itself?

Do you need to break out of an infinite loop with C-g?
