editing .emacs-file for ess (windows version)

Hello everybody

we want to customize our ESS for R under windows 2000.  For example we want 
to set the R directory to d:\R using

(setq ess-pre-run-hook
         `((lambda () (setq R-directory "D:/R"))))

This seems not to be the right way (or the right syntax) to define a path 
under windows and xemacs. Does anyone know the solution?
