slow c-L from R

System info:
R Version 1.3.1  (2001-08-31) on Windows 2000
ESS v. 5.1.18 using emacs ver. 20.7.1

Colleagues

I find that the control-L command to submit an R script through ESS runs 
very slowly with my setup (it took 8 seconds for the script I am currently 
working on). This operation was almost instantaneous on a unix 
machine when I was using S-Plus. I know they are not strictly 
comparable except in terms of my expectation for a rapid 'compile'. 

Any suggestions on why my setup might be so slow, or what I need to 
show you to permit an assessment of my setup?
