installing ESS with no root privilege

Ususally I unpack ESS in a directory ~/Emacs , resulting in my case in 
~/Emacs/ess-5.1.18

Using just the Makefile in the lisp subdir you can bytecompile the lispfiles.

Then add
(load "/home/detlef/Emacs/ess-5.1.18/lisp/ess-site")

to your .emacs file.

If R is in your search path this should suffice.
(I´m using emacs, not xemacs, but I think that shouln´t matter up to here.)
