I must apologize -- I blamed ESS for running "slowly" when in fact the
reason was R coding errors on my part.  Since that message I was able to
run with success a small (three line) test batch of R code under ESS!!!
Very exciting!!!  Thank you and the other developers/users for making ESS
possible!!!
