infinite loop in xemacs (20.0) w/ ESS for SAS (5.1.18)

My next guess is that there is a conflict between make-regexp.el and Xemacs.

Does anyone else have a similar problem on Xemacs and ESS?

The only irregularity I see in what you did is the `provide' statement.
You should not do that in .emacs.  The provide statement is usually the last
line in a package,  in this case it is the last executable statement in
make-regexp.el.

Can you attempt a line-by-line execution of essl-sas.el to confirm which
statement is causing the conflict?
