I want to point out that Martin's keys use the string " <- " for ess-S-assign.
The spaces around the arrow do two things, both important.
1. they make the code legible for human readers.
2. they prevent the potential ambiguity of  a<-3
which could mean either 
  a <- 3
or
  a < -3
