ESS & SuSE Linux (auctex)

Hi,

I installed ESS (together with R) from the SuSE 6.4 directory
at CRAN (ess-emacs-5.1.13-1.i386.rpm). As the installation routine
told me, I added (load "/usr/share/emacs/site-packages/ess-start.el" t
t)
to my .emacs file. Both, R and ESS seem to cooperate without problems
now - so far everything is fine!

However, I use also teTeX with auctex from the SuSE distribution. If
I now load a large LaTeX file into emacs, this process takes a long(!)
time stating "Fontifying xxxx.tex ... (syntactically ...)" and
"Fontifying
xxxx.tex ... (regexps ...)" subsequently. Both appear only since I
installed ESS. My feeling is that auctex now scans the whole buffer
and not only the visible region as it did previously. Is there any
(easy) way to change this behaviour back to the original?

Unfortunately, my Linux-PC is a slow 200MHz Pentium (that's maybe the
real problem ;-)).

Thanks in advance, Marlene

BTW: the OS is "SuSE 7", however the same effect occurred with previous
SuSE versions. emacs is 20.7.1., auctex is 9.9p.
