Slow response to C-c C-x, C-c C-t, C-c C-s and C-c C-v

I'm running R-0.90.1 through ESS-5.1.11 in NTemacs 20.5.1 on a Windows
NT 4 machine.

I experience very slow responses to C-c C-x (ess-execute-objects) and C-c
C-s (ess-execute-search) as well as C-c C-t (ess-execute) and C-c C-v
(ess-display-help-on-object). It takes about 6 seconds before the
result is displayed in the appropriate buffer (for ess-execute and
ess-display-help-on-object, that is after the input is entered in the
minibuffer).

The corresponding R commands (e.g. ls() or search()) finishes (and
displays their output) instantaneously, so it doesn't seem to be a
problem with R itself.

I've experienced this problem on all versions of R, ESS and NTemacs that
I can remember having used, including various versions of R starting
with 0.64.something, and ESS starting with 5.1.7 (i believe), as well as
Emacs 20.2 (or 3?) and Emacs 20.5.

I run R, ESS and GNU Emacs (more or less the same versions as above) on
a Linux machine, and there the problem doesn't exist.

The ESS lisp code is byte compiled. (This shouldn't affect execution
time anyway, once the files are loaded.)

Is this a known problem, or is there something wrong with my setup on
the NT machine. (I haven't installed the ddeclient or gnuserv/gnuclient
packages, can this have anything to do with the problem?)
