To highlight a region by keyboard
C-@ (some keyboards require C-S-@,  PC's also permit C-SPC)
move cursor somewhere else
M-w

move cursor to destination
C-y



On the M-r question, M-r or A-r works fine.   The trick is that regular
expressions don't have to have fancy syntactic characters in them.  just type
the first few characters you are looking for and then RET.


there are no stupid questions about emacs.  The answer is always "Yes, this is
how you do it."   Use C-h i for the info on emacs (the manual).  Use C-h a for apropos
information on a specific topic.
