You can use 12.03-1 upstream, and my version becomes 12.03-1-1.
As well as 12.03.1 leading to Debian's 12.03.1-1.

Debian should not impose any constraints on how you number. The scheme copes
with just about anything (and CRAN alone has a wide variety.

| Good question.
| Debian (ubuntu) always need to "derive" version numbers from
| upstream.
|
| As a matter of fact, the easiest would be to use 12.04
| and that's what I have in my (uncommitted) version of ESS.
|
| Would that (12.04) be fine?
| It still does not answer how we should name patch releases in
| general. What if we want another patch release later in April?

|
| PS: I probably wont get to a release today!
| Will be very preoccupied with other things (mostly even off
| computer).
