Yeh, this type of stuff happens all the time. It is just an uncleaned
install or wrong ESS location. Happens to me as well as I have several
locations from where ESS can be loaded.

This is precisely the reason why I made M-x ess-version to report
current ESS dir. That should be your primary clue.
