I think ess-remote's days are numbered. We haven't gotten around
to actually removing it. But, it is from a paradigm that is now
antiquated with faster pipes and newer technology like NX/x2go/etc.
Likely, it will be removed in the next release (or soon after).
And, those XEmacs docs are from an ancient version of ESS that was
part of the XEmacs package system. Perhaps, if you did use
that version of ESS, it would work. You can find the last of those
(circa 2005) at http://ftp.xemacs.org/Attic/packages/oldpkg/
