I meant to say: There is no bug in ESS here;
it was part of my own ESS initialization where I had added a
recommendation by someone on ESS-help;
and that recommendation was plain wrong, i.e. it killed working
of all ispell-* in my use of emacs...

The fact that it has shown only now, when I now longer
remembered the exact origin of that code snippet,
is a sign that I don't use spell checking very often....
