Thank you, Sam, for your report.
My ESS core fellows may remember that I had a *very* very similar bug
report about 3-4 weeks ago,  when also C-c C-v  (or 'h' when in
ess-help mode !) would not offer the symbol that my point was on, and
even C-c C-v  did not offer it.
At the time, I asked others for confirmation, and Vitalie and someone
else could not confirm it, so
"it was decided" that it was just my local emacs setup..

as we now see, this can happen more frequently than we hoped...
there's some bug lurking somewhere .. and we don't know yet how and
when this bogous behavior starts showing itself...
