Thanks for taking the time to investigate this -- this issue has also
bugged me for many years, although never enough to get the urge to fix
it; I'm glad that you have.  I've not got much time to look into this
over the next couple of weeks, but if no-one else on the ESS core gets
to it before me, I'll see what happens.  It looks like you've done a
great job investigating where the filling mechanism breaks.
