This is the paragraph from ess.pdf that you quoted.

Add the line
          (load "C:/emacs/ess-VERSION/lisp/ess-site")

to your emacs initialization file. (GNU Emacs uses the filename ~/.emacs and
XEmacs uses the filename ~/.xemacs/init.el for the initialization file. The
tilde is recognised by emacs as your HOME directory, i.e. the value of your
HOME environment variable.) Replace VERSION above with the version number of
ESS. Remember to use forwardslashes /, rather than backslashes \, in your
filename inside emacs code files.

In GNU emacs, it says the initialization file is ~/.emacs
In XEmacs, the initialization file is ~/.xemacs/init.el
Your email did not say which version of Emacs you are using.
If the file doesn't exist yet, then create it with emacs and put
that single line (edited for your machine) in it.

Please use the ess-help at stat.math.ethz.ch mailing list for general questions
and
the ESS-bugs at stat.math.ethz.ch mailing list if you think you found a bug in
ESS.
Please do not write to individuals.

Dear AJ Rossini, RM Heiberger, K Hornik, M. Maechler, RA Sparapani, or SJ E=
glen

I am attempting to run WinBUGS within R (version 2.6.0). Since I will be n=
eeded ESS to provide the model, I have attempted to download ESS version 5.=
3.6 (ess-5.3.6.zip).

After downloading ess-5.3.6.zip onto my hard drive, and opening via WinZip,=
I found 168 files. Which file do I open in order to install ESS on my ha=
rd drive, and which program do I use to open this file?

The PDF documentation "ESS" appears to imply in chapter 2.2 that there is a=
n "initialization file" I could not locate this file among the 168 files. =
Does it have a different name?

Sincerely,
Guy W. Tillinghast, MD
