1. xemacs and ESS opened in directory without .RData file:

 > options()$STERM
[1] "iESS"

 > options()$editor
[1] "gnuclient.exe"

2. xemacs and ESS opened in directory containing a .RData file

 > options()$STERM
NULL

 > options()$editor
[1] "emacs"
