Thank you for trying to find out more -- don't be sorry !

But, really you can still give more details that I don't know:

1) are ``in the *R* buffer'' when you press return ?
or editing a *.R script file
or even in a *.Rt or *.Rout transcript file

   when this happens?

2) Are you at the end of buffer, ...
   ...

I assume it won't.

I've already committed a workaround to the problem for xemacs
(basically the one Rodney proposed), but it is really a
workaround, not a solution.

You could also make us a favor and get
either only https://svn.r-project.org/ESS/trunk/lisp/ess-emcs.el
or get all of https://svn.r-project.org/ESS/trunk/lisp/
which is ``the current development version of ESS''
and may be confirm that the problem doesn't happen anymore.

In that case, I'd consider to release ESS 5.2.7 as a bug fix
release for this nasty Xemacs problem.

Martin
