It sounds like something is strange with the MAC emacs.  I can't
help there.  I am forwarding your mail and my responses to ess-bugs (which I
am a member of).  Please send further requests to ess-bugs at stat.math.ethz.ch
so one of the other people can respond to these macintosh specific questions.

In general in emacs, the C-g character will stop the long hangups you are observing.
The problem is in timing.  Somehow the "> " prompt from R is not corectly recognized,
or is delayed, or something out of order.
