[ESS-bugs] ess-mode 5.1.21; "fontifying" takes forever

Hi Tony and Rich,
I uninstalled the ess that came with Xemacs (using the Xemacs -> tools -> packages -> list and install menu), and installed ess-5.2.0beta3.by unwrapping the tar file and adding the following line to my init file:
(load "~/elisp/ess-5.2.0beta3/lisp/ess-site")
Xemacs finds the latest version (I'm prompted to type C-h m for help on ESS version 5.2.0beta3), but otherwise I get the same behavior as before. Curiously (despite what I said in my previous message), it looks like whenever I open ANY new buffer that uses fonts (e.g. a LaTeX document) AFTER I start an R/ESS session, the fontifying takes forever. If I open the same LaTeX document in a "fresh" Xemacs (that has never started an R/ESS session) then the fontifying takes less than a second.
Steve

Part of the problem is that XEmacs doesn't ship with the new version
of ESS. That's my fault, I need to commit the upgrades.
best,
