Did you try the obvious?

 > x <- 1:5
 > 2^x
[1]  2  4  8 16 32
 > y <- matrix(rep(1:5, 5), ncol=5)
 > 2^y
      [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [,5]
[1,]    2    2    2    2    2
[2,]    4    4    4    4    4
[3,]    8    8    8    8    8
[4,]   16   16   16   16   16
[5,]   32   32   32   32   32
