Nicky
Postdoctoral position in Microarray Bioinformatics/Data Mining
Description:
We offer a post-doctoral level position to a dynamic individual
interested in working collaboratively on a range of exciting research
projects that require the application of statistical and data-mining
techniques for the analysis of microarray and high throughput proteomics
data. The individual hired for this position will become a member of a
national initiative to grow high throughput biology in South Africa.
(S)he will work as part of a team based at the University of Cape Town
(UCT) and will provide expertise to projects that make use of the newly
instituted Centre for Proteomics and Genomics Research (CPGR), located
at the university. This will involve consultation with senior students
and faculty on data analysis and the provision of intellectual input
into the design of experiments based at institutions across South Africa
that make use of the high throughput facilities at UCT. Experience with
R-Bioconductor would be advantageous, as consultations may involve the
development of R scripts for a particular analysis. In addition, the
holder of this position will be encouraged to adopt a leadership role in
the development of a national working group on the application of
statistical methods to high throughput biology and, as part of this
activity, will contribute to the organization and presentation of
training courses in statistics and data-mining. The position includes
the opportunity to develop new research projects independently or in
collaboration with other researchers at the CPGR or other institutions
in South Africa, and offers the successful candidate an opportunity to
get involved in a range of exciting activities.
Requirements:
The position requires experience with data analysis for high-throughput
biology or a quantitative background and a willingness to learn. A
formal qualification in bioinformatics, applied mathematics or
statistics as well as good knowledge of microarray experimental design,
pre-processing and analysis methodologies would be advantageous. Good
communication skills are also essential.
