Hi Kasper et al.

from my large-array project, I share your views on using the 
compress=TRUE option for saving .rda files - it makes a big difference 
in disk usage at negligible cost of CPU time, and I'd like to see it 
encouraged.

Contrary to what seems to have been said, I think this does not 
noticeably affect the RAM usage.
