Skitour to Hockenhorn (3293m) and Wildstrubel (3244m)

Pictures taken by Marcel and Adrian on January 25th and 26th, 2008

Our tour started in the Lötschental, from where we took the lifts up to Hockenhorngrat (3111m, 27CHF per person). From there, you traverse below the summit of Hockenhorn to reach its SW side and leave the skis behind. Over a steep scree slope you reach the summit by some scrambling. We were on top so quickly, that we only have a picture of the descent, showing the summit slope with the backdrop towards Gasterental.

We returned to the skis and took a first ride down to Kummenalp (2086m). The descent starts right at the easterly foot of Klein Hockenhorn and holds some steeper sections, as well as optimally inclined slopes. The snow conditions were fantastic, perfect corn snow in the middle of January!

At Kummenalp, we put the skins on and, via Lötschenpass, climbed to Gitzifurggu. This is Kathrin arriving there, with the summit of  Bietschorn (3934m), which we had climbed in August 2007, looming behind.

We continued the climb to P.2980 at the foot of Balmhorn, from where a long ride down towards Leukerbad was waiting

Adrian exclaimed "das sind no Häng...", and off he was, rocking a first line down towards Leukerbad.

Still Adrian, a few dozen of turns later, stopping for a break.

Now it's my turn - too fast for the photographer, though ;-)

Kathrin can do it as well... line number 3 below the summit of Ferdenrothorn (3180m)

The next optimal slope: Adrian approaches me with speed.

We spent the night in Leukerbad (1400m) and on the next morning took the cable car to Gemmi (2314m, 8CHF per person, runs at 9am). After a first short descent a long flat traverse over Lämmerenboden follows, before you finally reach the wide open and very scenic Wildstrubelgletscher, visible here.

Kathrin and Adrian climbing, on the way to the middle summit (3244m) of Wildstrubel. Bietschhorn is still looming behind.

Adrian with the high alps from Weisshorn (4505m) over Matterhorn (4478m) to Dent Blanche(4327m) behind.

For the way down, we skied along the ridge towards Grossstrubel and then took a left down the Ammertengletscher (in front of whose seracs Adrian elegantly swings down) and towards Lenk. We again enjoyed fresh powder without a trace! Beware of three very steep sections in case of avalanche danger, good route choice is a must!
