Hiking to the Cirque of the Towers in the Wind River Range

Pictures taken by Marcel Dettling and Corinne Dahinden in August, 2005.

Camping at Big
Sandy trailhead

It's a long dirt road drive (be sure to have good directions), but we made it to the camp at Big Sandy trailhead.

Big Sandy
trail

We leave early towards Big Sandy lake, Jackass Pass and the Cirque of the Towers - what a beautiful hike!

Towers in the
Wind River Range

Towers in the Wind River Range. And a thunderstorm threatening. It moved away, fortunately.

Cirque of the
Towers

This is the Cirque of the Towers, seen from Jackass Pass. It's about 12 miles and 5 hours to get there.

Pingora Peak

This is Pingora Peak with its famous climb, the South Buttress (5.6). Wolf Ridge is the mountain to the left.

Nameless peak
in the Wind River Range

Another peak in the Wind River Range with a beautiful rock face - definitely wakes the hunger to climb...

Bouldering in
the Wind River Range

Pingora Peak is greeting in the far distance - time do do some bouldering for me!

Big Sandy
Lake

Big Sandy Lake on the looooong way back to the trailhead: isn't it idyllic?
