Skitouring around Disentis
Piz Maler (2790m) - Piz Gannaretsch (3040m) - Piz Muraun (2897m)
Pictures taken by Marcel and Kathrin on February 8-10, 2008
Day 1 - Piz Maler (2790m)

| After a
leisurely breakfast at home and the drive to Sedrun, we started our tour
at the bridge P. 1354 below Surrein. |

This is Kathrin climbing on the NE-ridge of Piz Maler, with the summits of Tödi, Piz Urlaun and Bifertenstock behind. |

| Beautiful view to the dam of
Lai da Nalps, with Piz Gannaretsch, Piz Vatgira, Piz Lai Blau and Piz
Rondadura behind |

The last 70m of elevation require some scrambling on the beautiful NW-ridge |

Kathrin arriving on the cairn and flag decorated summit of Piz Maler (2790m). We enjoyed gorgeous weather and a perfect view. The ride back into the valley was also great: we chose the direct route through the northerly exposed valley Nual, which offered fantastic powder snow (sorry, no pics since it was all in the shade). |
Day 2 - Piz Gannaretsch (3040m)

The next day, again perfect weather and pristine winter scenery, where we could lay the first trace :-) |

Kathrin climbing above the frozen Lai Verd (2702m). The ice was more than 30cm thick! Behind is Piz Lai Blau. |

Over the last 200m of elevation, the south flank of Piz Gannaretsch is around 45 degrees steep. We used the skis as far as possible, but the last bit can only be negotiated on foot. Yes, it was quite strenuous, but what a pleasure! |

Kathrin arriving on the summit. Spannort and Krönten to her left, Piz Giuv and Bristen to her right. |

Mmhhmmm, there was some untraced powder left for us :-). These are our first couple of turns in the south flank of Piz Gannaretsch. For truly appreciating how steep it was, please see the next picture. |

View of Piz Gannaretsch with our (in this resolution not so well visible) traces on the left side of the summit. |
Day 3 - Piz Muraun (2897m)

Our tour started at Tenigerbad (1305m) in Val Sumvitg, a deserted place in wintertime. Again, no traces here, so I had to put up one on my own... which made for around 5000m of tracing/elevation gain this weekend! |

This tour was very, very beautiful. Perfect weather, sunshine in abundance and pristine scenery all around. This is the view towards the pre-summit (P.2770) of Piz Muraun. |

This is Kathrin climbing the steep slope to the pre-summit P.2770 of Piz Muraun. It's a sustained 35 degrees steep over 200 vertical meters, with the exit well reaching 40 degrees. |

Then, what follows is an alpinistic intermezzo. The skis need to be mounted on the backpack and a 350m long, horizontal ridge needs to be traversed. Some steep sections and scrambling are included. |

A close up of the ridge from the summit. For the descent, we traversed the ridge again. However, it would be possible to do without, by taking a left at its beginning. The terrain there, though very steep, is well skiable. But 40 degrees over 300m of elevation, plus northerly exposition make for quite some avalanche danger, so that we didn't dare... |

Summit view towards Piz Medel (3211m), with the empty log box in the foreground. |

The ride was a dream, as we encountered between absolutely fantastic and absolutely megafantastic powder. Wow! |
