Administrative aspects

In the "Advanced Studies" course, a total of about 450 hours of classes are taught on around 65 days of teaching. These take place from February 2011 to February 2013. Classes generally take place on Mondays; the introductory module in spring 2011, however, will be taught on Thursdays.

The introductory module consists of a class taught from 8:15am to 10am on Thursdays and a subsequent supplementary class with additional material and answering questions about the statistics software R. A mandatory exercise class then takes place from 11am to 12noon, and in the afternoon, additional exercises and revision times provide the opportunity to amend any remaining gaps in knowledge.

The foundational modules are taught in the autumn semester 2011 and spring semester 2012. Each contains two classes taught on Mondays from 8:15am to 10am and 1:15pm to 3pm. Supplementary classes from 10:15am to 12noon and 3:15pm to 5pm offer additional material, and participants also work on computer exercises in this time.

The times of the other blocks are shifted slightly: 9;15am to 11am and 1:15pm to 3:30pm for the presentations (lectures), 11:15am to 12:30pm and 3:45pm to 5pm for the exercises.

The additional time required for homework is highly dependent on the student's prior knowledge of statistics. Experience shows, though, that each day of tuition requires a further day of independent study and homework.

Diploma theses are written during the Advanced section of the course. They must be completed by February 2013.

Location: All classes take place at ETH Zurich (Campus Zentrum).

Language: Teaching generally takes place in German. Parts of the Advanced modules are taught in English.

Admission: Participation in this course generally requires a Master of Science containing an introductory course on Probability and Statistics. The introduction to Statistics will be repeated in the introductory module.
The introductory module is completed by an examination; this must be passed in order to proceed to the subsequent modules. The examination can be repeated once.
After the introductory module, the number of participants is restricted. If the capacity of the course is exceeded, the admission criteria are extended beyond the aforementioned exam to further include timely enrolment, grades in preceding examinations and professional experience.

Partial attendance: In principle in it also possible to participate in individual modules rather than the whole course. However, this is subject to the availability of places in these modules and to a positive assessment of academic suitability by the Advanced Studies director.

Graduation: Participants who have successfully completed the introductory module and the mandatory parts of the four foundational classes will receive the course certificate.
The diploma in Advanced Studies in Applied Statistics of ETH Zurich requires students to successfully complete further modules, give a presentation in the Workshop and write a satisfactory diploma thesis. A total of 30 ECTS credits must be attained.
Classes and coursework completed outside of this course may be counted at the discretion of the Advanced Studies Director if these classes and work have not been counted towards another degree, diploma or certificate.

All participants receive a transcript listing the parts of the course they attended.

Costs: The cost of the course is Sfr 1000.-- for the introductory module, a further Sfr 3000.-- for the rest of the certificate-level course and another Sfr 3000.-- for the diploma course. Participating only in individual half-day blocks costs Sfr 120.-- per half day. These costs include all printed teaching materials.
Employees and PhD students of ETH Zurich will not be billed for these course costs if their participation is in the interest of their institute.
Disenrolment between the application deadline and the second day of classes leads to a Sfr 200.-- cancellation fee. Disenrolment at a later date incurs the full fees of the module which has been started (introduction, certificate course or diploma course).

Students are responsible for their own insurance coverage (eg. against ill health and accidents).

Enrolment: Applicants should use the following application form to enrol by December 15, 2010 at the Seminar for Statistics. If not all conditions for admission are satisfied and an applicant thus needs to submit an application to waive requirements, such an application will generally be considered within four weeks and no later than one week before the start of the course. Delayed enrolment can only be considered if the capacity of the course permits this.
