JMP

As its name suggests, JMP (`Software for Statistical Visualization') is a statistical tool for visualizing data. It was originally developed for Macintosh by SAS Institute, though there now is a Windows version, too. Its philosophy resembles that of Data Desk (tables of data are dynamically linked to other tables and to graphics). It offers a better selection of statistical methods than DataDesk. Linear models can be handled quite comfortably. The user does not need to use a different command for each model, but need only specify a model for which JMP then uses the method that fits the type of data (continuous or categorial). Thus linear regression, analysis of variance, logistic regression and analysis of contingency tables are automatically distinguished. The results are presented using text and graphics and can thus be saved as a report for
potential further editing using a word processor.

Convincing features of JMP include its simple user interface, dynamically explorative graphics and its excellent spreadsheet functionality (summaries, excerpts etc.). It covers enough functions in most cases (unless bootstrapping or other, truly complex, methods are required by the user). Furthermore, it is now scriptable, enabling the reproduction of evaluations.

In short: JMP is a wonderful programm for explorative analysis and simple applications. It also contains a substantial section for the design of experiments. Committed Mac users are recommended to use JMP for statistics, since it is one of the few products which will continue to be developed for the Mac in the time to come.

JMP is not the same (!) as the Mac or PC version of SAS.

Availability at ETH

JMP is available over IDES. You will find all the information here.

Consulting and courses

JMP is not supported by the Seminar for Statistics. We do not offer any courses on this software.
